What are Broadcast Channels?

A Broadcast Channel is exactly what you’d this it is, it’s a means for Instagram creators to direct message all of their followers all at once – think of it as a one to many group chat.

As it is simply a broadcast users cannot reply but they can react to messages. You must first accept the invitation to a broadcast channel before you begin receiving messages from it.

The premise of a broadcast channel is pretty neat, it gives creators a more personal interactions with their followers. Allowing the creators to send videos, images and voice notes only to people in their broadcast channel. Broadcast channels also allow creators to get their followers opinions on things using polls. For example: “Where should I do my next show?” or “What do you want to see in my next videos?”.

Remember BBM Broadcasts? It’s like that except much more engaging.

(For the younger members of the audience, BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) was the messaging app on BlackBerry phones before the iPhone and WhatsApp came to take over.)

Why do I keep getting so many notifications about broadcast channels?

Meta/Instagram have introduced additional settings in the notifications area to control what notifications you will receive from Broadcast Channel invitations and also messages if you are already in a Broadcast Channel. By default both of these settings are defaulted to ‘Yes’, which means you will receive notifications.

My theory is that everyone’s phones will stop blowing up from Broadcast channel invitations once the initial hype from this new feature has worn off, and most creators are set up with their Broadcast Channels already. But there is no guarantee in that, and you’ll still receive them when you follow new creators.

So let’s turn those annoying Broadcast Channel notifications off…

You don’t need to turn both off, you can just turn one or the other off and you can always come back and turn them back on if you’re unhappy with the settings.
